With narrow sizes, the higher the
number, the narrower is it. For example, a 5A is narrower than a 3A, which is
narrower than an A. In wide sizes, the higher the number, the wider is it. For
example, a 5E is wider than a 3E, which is wider than an E.
Widths can also depend on whether a shoe is for men
or women. For example, a womans medium width is a "B", while a
mans medium width is a "D".
Some other examples you may find are
"S" or "N" for narrow widths, an "M" for medium
widths or a "W" or "XW" for wide widths. Here are some
basic examples of these widths:
SS (narrowest)
S
N
M (medium)
W
WW or XW (widest)
You may find shoe sizings that use a combination of
these labels, such as "4A(SS)" or "4A(S)".
